Frame

This consists of three parts; the head which is the top of the frame, the sill which sits at the bottom and the jambs which are the vertical parts located at the sides. These come in a variety of designs and colours.

Traditionally older windows tend to be single glazed although double glazing has become the most popular option in recent times. The glazing itself is the piece or pieces of glass within the frame.

Sashes

The movable part of the window which also holds the window glass. The most popular sash windows consist of a top and bottom sash.

Meeting rail

This is where the two sashes meet.

 

Top and bottom rails

The rails are the top part of the top sash and the bottom part of the bottom sash.

 

 

Pole eyes

These enable you to slide down the top sash.

 

Tilt knobs

These slide towards the middle of the sash to tilt the window inwards and can be located at the top of the bottom sash.

 

Sash locks

By turning the latch which is installed on the meeting rails you can lock and unlock the window.

 

Safety restrictions

These restrictions can be located on either side of the sash and prevent the sashes from being opened more than 100mm.
