Welcome to our Home Security Guide for your windows in your home.
According to the office for national statistics UK, in the UK alone there were approximately 291,816 burglaries in 2019. Whilst we cannot guarantee unlawful entry, here at U Fit we ensure that all of our windows and doors include secure locks that will help deter unwanted visitors and help make your home more secure. We have also noted 5 tips below for you to consider to ensure home security is your top priority!
1. Keep all doors and windows locked to improve Home Security.
Around forty percent (40%) of criminals will make unlawful entry through either a door or a window. So if your window locks are broken, getting them fixed is of the upmost importance. If leaving your property unattended always keep doors and windows locked, as this should deter most criminals. Windows are often left open during the summer months which proves most popular for burglars to gain easy access to your home. Window break alarms can also provide extra security whilst also being a more purse friendly option to a home security system.
2. Get extra locks for sliding windows
Locks are the weak point on any door or window. Placing small metal hinges or plastic latches will provide little security, a better option is adding extra locking ironware to prevent illegal entry. Sliding window locks clip onto the window and obstructs the tracks where the window side in, preventing the window being opened. Whilst making a conscious effort to make sure all windows are closed and locked, interior metal window locks can make your home more secure.
3. Bushes and plants
Surrounding your home with bushes and plants will make it harder for an intruder to access your property. ‘There are a variety of trees, plants and bushes which are good for security and by situating them outside windows, especially ground floor windows. This way, you could reduce the chance of access into the house as well as preventing burglars from seeing what is inside with the use of trees or plants
4. Place motion sensors outside windows
A good tip to keep your home safe is to keep the surrounding areas well lit and covered with sensor lights, which will illuminate when motion is detected. See some examples here. When the sensors pick up movement the light should force the burglar to retreat rather than taking solace in a darker area of your property.
5. Put window alarms to monitor entry.
Most window sensors are wireless, easy to install and very effective. The system will be able to monitor the entry points to your home and then look for motion in certain areas. Some systems are also able to call for help when you are not home and the alarm is activated. It is suggested that sensors are installed on all windows and in other locations where access could be gained.
They work either using magnetic sensors or by vibrations on the glass. When triggered an alarm will sound and alert intruder and homeowner will be alerted. They can also work as a deterrent as it is possible that a burglar may notice these in your home and leave.
Hints and tips from reformed burglars
