Introduction
Wondering how to clean sash windows? whether they are timber or UPVC, It’s simpler than you think as long as you’re equipped with the right cleaning items and the best methods. Try to avoid cleaning on a warm, sunny day as windows dry more quickly which can result in streaky glass.
Safety precautions when cleaning sash windows
Always ensure that you are safety conscious when cleaning your sash windows. If your windows are all within easy reach, then you should have no problem cleaning your own windows. Be sure that you’re steady and standing on a flat surface at all times. If you have high windows in your home then it might be worth hiring a professional window cleaner.
What to clean sash windows with
For the interior glass of your sash windows, a simple glass cleaning spray will do the trick. For the exterior of your windows, use a mild dishwashing liquid mixed with water and a soft sponge or microfibre cloth, and squeegee any excess water away. For extra shine, give the glass a polish with a dry cloth after cleaning. Soapy water can be used on the frames of timber or UPVC sash windows, but if cleaning timber be sure to dry them gently with a cloth after cleaning.
Another great option for cleaning the interior and exterior of your windows is diluted vinegar. Simply mix vinegar 50/50 with water and use it in a spray bottle. If you’re looking for a scented cleaning product, add a little bit of lemon juice or some essential oils to the mixture for a lovely, natural fragrance.
Ditch the paper towels
Paper towels leave lint behind, result in streaky windows, and move dirt from one place to another. Instead, invest in some good quality microfibre cloths. The small fibres pick up dirt leaving your windows beautifully clean and streak-free. Before first use, be sure to soak the cloth in hot water or put the cloth in the washing machine at a high temperature to increase effectiveness.
Inspect windows for signs of disrepair
When cleaning your sash windows it’s a great opportunity to check for any signs of disrepair. If you have traditional timber-framed sash windows, check for rotting timber and any areas where the paint is chipping. For timber and UPVC windows, check that seals are in good order, and all parts are running smoothly.
